Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!

"Be still?" You've got to be kidding!

Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!

"Be still and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10

Rush! Rush! Rush!

"Be still, my soul, the Lord is on thy side..." — from the hymn

("Be Still, My Soul," by Katherine von Schlegel)

Do this! Do that! Do it now!

"Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord." — Exodus 14:13

Two different calls to us: The scream of the pressure of daily living and the still small voice of the Lord. How do we heed the quiet one? How do I even hear it in the clash and clang of daily living?

Being busy isn't the root of the problem. A full schedule doesn't hurt anyone. The problem is letting my priorities get all out of whack.

You know what I mean. I'm busy and pretty soon I forget to talk to the Lord. I don't read my Bible. I may not even pay much attention in church.

Sometime I even forget that He's right there beside me to help deal with the stress! How can I forget the friend that sticks closer than a brother? (Proverbs 18:24)

But that isn't the worst of it. When I forget that the Lord is by my side, I start doing everything in my own strength, according to my own short-sighted will. And then — do you know what happens then? — I fall flat on face.

Then I hear the still small voice: "Be still." And it is such a sweet sound because I have been trying so hard to do everything right, but I just can't do it by myself.

And every time there He is — waiting for me to pay attention.
What a friend

"Stayed upon Jehovah,

Hearts are fully blest;

Finding as He promised

Perfect peace and rest."

— from the hymn Like a River Glorious
